ILDASM and Microsoft Intermediate Language When I first started playing with NET several years ago, I wrote the usual "Hello World!" program and immediately wanted to see how it all worked under the covers I had quite the shock when I realized that NET was essentially a whole new development environment! In this section, I ll talk about the opposite: how to take a string and obtain an object representation of it. Obtaining an object from a string isn t a very common operation, but it does occasionally come in handy. Microsoft felt it necessary to formalize a mechanism by which strings can be parsed into objects. Any type that can parse a string offers a public, static method called Parse. Think about claims the same way you think about attributes in Active Directory or some other central repository over which you have little control. Depending on your organization, it may be easy or dif cult to centralize lots of information about users and issue claims to share that information with applications. It rarely makes sense to centralize data that is speci c to one application only. In fact, even applications that use claims can still bene t from storing a table that contains user information. This table is where you can keep application-speci c user data that no other application cares about. This is data for which your application is authoritative. In other words, it is the single source for that data, and someone must be responsible for keeping it up to date. Another use for a table like this is to cache non-authoritative data that you get from claims. For example, you might cache an e-mail claim for each user so that you can send out noti cation e-mail without the user having to be logged in. You should treat any cached claims as read-only and refresh them the next time the user visits your application and presents fresh claims. Include a date column that you update each time you freshen the record. That way, you know how stale the cached claims have become when it comes time to use them.
