DataReaders are quick and fast, but they re much like pay-per-view television. The only way to watch a film again once you ve finished watching it is to go back to the channel and request it again. A DataSet, on the other hand, works like a video recorder; you can record the film off the television and watch it as many times as you like, rewinding and fast-forwarding through it as much as you like. With a DataSet, you can store any data that you may have use for throughout the lifetime of a page. This idea of persisting data away from the database is known as disconnected data. In fact, it s even better than a video recorder, because once you have data inside a DataSet, you can alter that data, add to it, delete from it, and send all the changes back to the database relatively easily. This is handy (don t you wish you could do that with some movies ).

Once you ve attached the ObjectDataSource to a class, the next step is to point it to the methods it can use to select and update records. The ObjectDataSource defines SelectMethod, DeleteMethod, UpdateMethod, and InsertMethod properties that you use to link your data access class to various tasks. Each property takes the name of the method in the data access class. In this example, you simply need to enable querying, so you need to set the SelectMethod property so it calls the GetCategories() method:

The GridView is more powerful than DataList and has many more features; in this chapter, you ll only use a part of GridView s possibilities, particularly the ones that allow for easy integration of Edit, Select, and Delete buttons, and database-bound column editing in Design View. It s worth taking a second look at the bits that are different from the previous exercises: The TieButton method tied the drop-down lists to their associated Go! buttons. The FileUpload control uploaded product pictures to the server. The code is pretty clear, so take a closer look at the Click event handlers of the two Upload buttons to see how the FileUpload control is used in practice. Various tests are made in the buttons Click event handlers to display accurate status messages to the visitor. A novelty in this control is checking whether a value of the drop-down lists has been selected before trying to read its value (this is useful especially in the situation when the list is empty). The DropDownList controls are populated in the PopulateControls method, and they are capable of storing a key for each of their entries, similar to what the DataKeyNames property does for the GridView. In our case, this key retains the IDs of the listed categories. You read this ID from the DropDownList controls when the user tries to move, assign, or remove the product from a selected category, by reading the SelectedItem.Value property of the list.

This tag shows a list of category names (thanks to the DataTextField property) and also keeps track of the category ID (using the DataValueField property). This example works fine so far. You can run the test web page and see the list of categories in the list box (as in Figure 24-9).
